Plagiarism: The Crime of the Successful

Trouble brewing in Austenland:

According to Prof Sutherland, far from breaking new ground, Jane’s Fame is in fact similar to an academic study, Jane Austen’s Textual Lives, from Aeschylus to Bollywood, that she published in 2005 after 10 years of research.

The Textual Lives is a pretty good read but hasn’t had the idea of aiming at a popular audience. Indeed the first chapter is all about how the popular audience is something of a construction. Academics! You can avoid all this by making your books more interesting!
