Literary nationalism has to mean more than claiming anyone who lived in your country, or was born there, belongs exclusively to you, says John Mullan. The other question to ask is, would the world have heard of Joyce if he had never left Dublin, or Gogol if he had never left the Ukraine? Not even the Irish would have heard of Joyce, so intent were they on banning his works before they had a chance to read them. We’d know Joyce as the author of The Holy Office and the ashes of the Dubliners.
