Wit and money

We all wish we could annoy people as much as Gore Vidal can. With a mind like that you can harm anyone anywhere, as of you had a flick sword or a hand nuke. His asides wound like a poison dart … A small sting, then the sensation of death by humiliation creeps through you. In the middle of one review he declares someone the avatar of a literary movement he despises, adding something along the lines of “do please Look up that word in the dictionary.”

James Cameron is on the point of teaching the entire English speaking world the meaning of the word avatar. Vidal’s sneerily funny chastising of his readers for using it as if it meant “best of” is about to be put in total perspective. All the wit in the world looks as lethal as a spoon besides James cameron and 300 million dollars.
